Marketing 101: Why Successful Alternative Health Practitioners Specialize

The truth is there are many businesses in the complementary alternative medicine field struggling. Businesses are struggling and yet American consumers are using alternative therapies more than ever before. There is no reason why these practitioners should struggle! But they are and there is no end in sight.

Patients can’t find CAM practitioners
The problem is that while consumers know and search for alternative therapies, they can’t find you and they don’t know how you can help. It’s often just as difficult for other doctors to refer to you – they don’t know exactly what you do.  

Marketing Medical Doctors is different than Alternative Health
Western medicine is structured differently than the CAM industry right from the beginning. In medical school doctors are trained to specialize and patients are accustomed to finding a doctor that “specializes” in their specific ailment; or at least that specific part of the body. Alternative health practitioners do just the opposite. They specialize in their field of healing, for example massage, acupuncture or nutrition.

A naturopathic doctor isn’t trained specifically to treat the heart or to work with ear nose and throat conditions. They are trained in overall naturopathic medicine – as a generalist. The same is true for many other CAM specialties. Look at acupuncture, chiropractic care, personal trainers, physical therapists, nutritionists and other energy workers fall into this lump of “non-specialty”.

So...while consumer’s and referring doctors are actively searching for alternative therapies for a specific ailment they can’t find it because CAM practitioners are advertising what they do, not how they help specific ailments. Consumers can’t find the help they desperately need because alternative health practitioners “heal it all”. They don’t specialize. But we are all used to specialists and finding exactly what we are looking for.
